We've noticed the "LiR" bubbles on the character sheets... how are these used?

If you're entering a LiR situation and you roll an appropriate skill, you note down the number of successes you earned. It's just there as a memory device.
For instance, you're stealthing through a castle and roll 4 successes. You write down 4. When the GM asks you how many you got, you can look down and see it rather than memorizing the number. It really helps if your LiR covers more than one session.

Thank you very much! We were stumped.

Ah, so those 4 successes would go against all (?) subsequent Observation checks (or Obstacles, presuming some unopposed test situation)?
Following up, then: how long would something Ride? Until a significant change in the circumstances under which the initial roll was made?
(Sorry, I am the lamer in my group who doesn't have BW, only BE... for now.)

Yes, usually until there's been some major change to the situation. In a typical adventure-y game, Stealthy, Observation, and Perception tend to be the big Let it Ride culprits.
