Hello. Recently my group and I have been playing a Burning Empires campaign. It's been good fun, but the campaign is rapidly drawing to a close. I estimate it'll take 2-3 more sessions (maybe one if things go horribly wrong!) to finish up. Anyway, my question is not about BE.

The group has yet to come to any consensus on what we want to play post-BE. I as GM, however, am adamant that whatever we play it Will-Be-On-Fire or I don't want to run it. Unfortunately, however, the players have mentioned playing stuff like a Wheel of Time or Marvel Super Heroes game. One player even wants to use the rules from the early 80s TSR Marvel game. If you want to review them those rules are available for free online since the game is out of print. I warn you, however. Its easier to keep one's sanity purusing a Cthulu wizard's library than reading the horrors inside the TSR Marvel game. I read a few pages and woke up hours later gibbering like a mad man. Apparently I missed my Steel check by a few points. But I digress.

Anyway, there is no way in the Nine Hells that I will run something with rules like Marvel Super Heroes. Not going to happen. The Wheel of Time game I'm not too worried about. Jordan's world would be a pretty easy fit inside Burning Wheel. Obviously rules would have to be come up with for Channeling, but that's a relatively minor complaint in the face of the other alternative. The other alternative being having to figure out some way to play Burning Marvel Super Heroes. Is this even possible or recommended? Or would I just be better off shoehorning Beliefs, Instincts, Traits, etc into some other super heroe game? Thoughts would be appreciated. I REALLY want to keep playing Burning Anything, but if my players get on a spandex kick I may not have a choice. Which sucks, because the player that is promoting Marvel also wants to run the game. Which is bad because German train lines are less rail-roady (is that a word?).

In case you missed it Brantai has already put down some ideas for a Channeling system. You might wanna check it out here (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5551).

This has come up before a few times. I think these are maybe the most specifically focused threads:

I'm somewhat ambivalent about Jordan's series, though I've read all of the books currently published, but I've always thought his system of magic was pretty original. (Which, of course, may just mean that I've never read the book(s) he stole it from!)

I have looked over those rules. I will definitly use elements of them if we end up playing something in the WoT. Like I said I don't really think that will be too difficult. A few of the players and I know alot about Jordan's world so I'm confident we can hammer out something agreeable to all.

For a super heroes game could you use the Monster burner for char generation and then have some Traits Grey level stats?

For example Superman could have Traits like:
Flies
AllergicToKryptonite
Lazer Eyes
UnderwearOnTheOutside

Instincts like:
Always wear my costume under my clothes
When playing Clark, always wear glasses

...

Stats:
Strength G6

etc.

What does anyone else think?

Dan.

Hmm. Interesting idea. If I did it that way the players would HAVE to have their concepts ready before we started burning them. Which is a bonus in my opinion. That's a really good idea dsellars. Thanks.

Those are fighting words, dude. I'm not even joking.

Burning Wheel can't do superheroes!

And MSH is awesome. It's totally brokened, but it's super easy to play.

You might consider taking a look at With Great Power... (http://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/search.php?mode=search&page=1) for supers. It's great, especially if you're into Silver-Age era Marvel comics.

The best supers experience I've had is with Mutants and Masterminds, one of the best uses of D20 in my opinion. It's simple to learn, has versatile hero creation rules and good forum support. I'm used it for everything from justice league style stuff to low level superhumans fighting in the Vietnam war.

Is Primetime Adventures a super super hero game? I seem to recall hearing good things about it.

Yeah, Burning Wheel is great, but sometimes going MarvelRetro for a few weeks can put things in perspective. You see the world afresh (in three badly inked colours); thank your God those dark, hack and slash, days are behind us.
As far as shoehorning beliefs go, this can end up with a game looking like Cinderella’s ugly sister. Of course you can do it, and many games have a reward system for good role playing, but Beliefs are so central to BW/BE that it won’t be satisfactory and you get the feeling that there is something missing. If you want beliefs to have such a central role (they can end up running the story for you) you might as well be playing BW/BE.
Have you ever considered that some people like playing those old rules to remind them of a simpler time, and remember those Marvel games in the school hall with nostalgic fondness nothing to do with the crappy game system itself?
Let your minions have there fun, they will come crawling back to for the Burn…Its one of their instincts.

It could be. It takes the format of a TV mini series, so it could be any genre you like.
The rules are very loose with a card based system for resolving ‘combat’. It encourages role playing in a kind of acting out scenes type way. Everyone kind of agrees on what would be cool to happen before hand. I liked some of the ideas but fear it may end up being more like ‘Give us a Clue’ then ‘The Prisoner’.
