Hi,
I was wondering if Seamanship was a deliberate omission from the rules. Our resident kooky fisherman was wondering what he was supposed to use to steer his boat!

Seamanship is in there... Skills list, under S.
It sounds like you might be talking about the fact that Seamanship doesn't let you steer? For that, you need the Pilot skill.
Despite the fact that the Japans are a collection of islands, they've never been famous as explorers, sailors or navigators. I would imagine that your fisherman would have no need to know the way from Eastern Honshu to Shikoku - as long as he knows where his favourite fishing grounds are, he's okay.

Do people have to take it as a General skill? Perhaps we have to assume that our fisherman is a land-based fisherman - or that he fully justifies his avoid storms instinct due to his total incompetence on the water?
And I could not find Seamanship in the BaF list... I wonder if I need better spectacles?
There was no tradition of seamanship to speak of as part of the Nihonese warrior and peasant classes. Their boats were glorified barges and they generally hugged the coast except when making ill-advised and ill-fated raids on Korea.

I guess our local sea-beasts find the fisherman a nutritious source of protein then! Turn-about is fair-play...
Luke, does BaF's setting just miss the beginning of the 'wako' pirate raids?
Yeah, if I remember correctly, when doing research I exclaimed, "Awesome, pirates! Wako pirates!" and then a moment later, "Fuck, wrong period."

As the player of the fisherman in question, I have a sudden perverse urge to change one of my Beliefs to "I will make an ill-advised raid on Korea".
I will probably get this urge under control before the next session...

Bugger.
Also: I just realised that the island for our BaF game is the island from Ultima-fucking-8. Why didn't I see this before!

Now I'm really tempted to work out a Wako pirate campaign.... hmm.. maybe I could tie it in with my Choson Korea setting ambitions!

Maybe becoming pirates can be a compromise after the climactic DoW that sees the players' rivals establish a Shogunate? ;)
