I searched the forums and read the book...and I might be missing something (happens to me all the time. )

In explaining the game to my gaming group, there was much excitement about character generation (which surprised me, I really expected them to whine about the combat system...) Being pleased I asked them about their character concepts. Well, I got a lot of them...however, in trying to show one of them how to create his character, I ran into a snag...

He wanted to be born in the seafaring life path, at some point be a "pirate" (possibly due to being taken as a kid from the ship) who reforms and joins the Navy. Now, the only way he can exit seafaring to the outcasts (where I would presume a pirate would be) is to become the ship's doctor, so to get his concept, he'd have to be a Sun of a Gun, Studetn, Doctor, pirate, soldier, Sailor (under professional Soldier I presume) That makes him quite a bit older than expected...is there a better way?

Also, is the only impact of age less starting physical points? Is there after affects (i.e. age spell or something like that hits a character...)

Okay, I threw two questions in there...I'll stop talking now....

Welcome, obatron!

Considering the pirate and privateer lifepaths weren't considered for the Character Burner when published, I think there is some leeway to be made so that they are more accessible from the Seafaring Setting. Outcast Leads should be available for the Sailor, at the very least, and I feel there should be leads to Outcast from Bosun and Captain, as well. Heck! Almost all of those lifepaths make sense to have a lead to Outcast!

And, outside of a smaller beginning stat pool, there is only one more effect from aging. When you take a Serious wound and you have a stat that is more than what the age chart permits, you won't regain more than the max allowed for that age. So if you had a Power of 8 for instance, and you were really old, and you took a terrible wound, and the max for that age was 7, you couldn't recover the stat beyond 7. That was explained terribly, forgive me.

Here are the links for the pirate and privateer

Also, Kublai's pulling out some really old school shit with that "Wound penalties reduce stat maximums". That's from generations-old BW and ain't in the book anywhere (nor does it fit with the current rules!)

anyway, sounds like he's got a cool concept. let him make the character as he sees fit.

Well I will be damned if I can find them but I recall us having discussions about age and some possible traits to cover such things.

I think age traits are the way to go, limiting the characters a little as they age. Abzu disagrees but he's been wrong before ;)
