Recently in our Burning Empires game, my character got into a Duel of Wits with his brother who is an NPC on the Vaylen side. I lost miserably and as a result had to agree to make a military strike against the criminal faction on the planet.

One of the other players who is currently playing a figure of note who is a leader within the criminal faction asked if it would be appropriate for him to initiate another duel of wits with my character with the aim of getting him to call of the attack.

Would it be possible to try and use a duel of wits to essentially override the terms of a previously lost duel of wits? Or would the other previous compromise hold no matter what?

Note that the terms of my previously lost duel of wits run completely counter to what the other player wanted to do with his duel of wits. There's no way for the two of them to peacefully co-exist. Either my character attacks the dome that the criminals live in or he doesn't.

The consequences of a duel of wits stand until they are changed by another conflict. So, yes, the other player could of course try to convince your character to call off the attack.

Put it another way: What if the criminal caught you and put you into a prison cell, or even killed you? He could, couldn't he, despite the DoW result. As I explicitly learned recently, DoW results last until something changes the situation, e.g. by another DoW. Taken together, I think it's quite clear that the criminal may attempt to sway your course.

Thanks for the response guys. As it happens no one at all tried to talk my character out of invading, so he did it. We had an awesome session. However, this advice helped clear up our confusion.

Is this different in Burning Empires, with its codified scene structure, than it is in Burning Wheel? I thought the only way to challenge the results of a Duel of Wits in BW was to escalate to violence, but without the Fight! rules, I could understand a player needing different options in BE.

Although I won't be surprised if I'm wrong somewhere in my assumptions.

No, the scenario as described in the OP would work under Burning Wheel. Remember the scenario is this.

Character A and B have a Duel of Wits. Character A loses and has to do action X.

Character C discovers that character A is going to do action X and Character C starts a duel of wits with A to get him to not do action X.

This is legal because character C was not a part of the original Duel of Wits and thus is not bound by it at all. So C challenging the DoW result with his own Duel of Wits is fine.

This is exactly what I thought of after I made my post. Thanks for the clarification.
