View Full Version : Abzu's Gen Con Games
Playing a game run by the game's designer doesn't mean it is going to be a good game. The skills it takes to run a good game are not necessarily the same skills it takes to GM andsometimes they just don't line up.
And then there is Luke.
He walked up tot he table on two different nights, introduced himself and proceeded to light the table on fucking fire. He put us in situations where we couldn't help but role-play our asses off.
If you are at a con and you don't fight, kick and burn to get into one of Abzu's game then you are missing right out.
More later, have to head to work but they were the two best Con games I have ever had the pleasure of sitting down and playing in.
Thanks, man.

Ditto Paka's sentiment on the combat demo's - even if it was only three exchanges before someone's head got caved in.

You are very welcome. Good players are nice to have as well. You, sir, are an amazing player.
Let's talk about that. Does that mean you have special skills that no one else has? No. At least I don't think so. I'd fathom a guess that you have simply informed your play with a little reading and a little insight and DECIDED that, when you enter a game, you want to have fun, be involved, and drive the story forward.
A simple decision, backed with communication, a willingness to compromise. That's all it takes.
Paka played a freaking GOBLIN in our second game and he was the goddamn center of the action. Not a show-stealer, but a solid participant in what was going on.
So listen to this man when he expounds on good gameplay, he knows what he's talking about. (that's not intended to be a back-handed compliment to me.)

You, Paka, sat at our table trying to get into the Little Fears game on Sunday. It's too bad you didn't stick around. We had room at the end. It was a very fun game with this kind of behavior going on at the table. Well no one was actually playing a goblin, but you get what I mean. :D

I agree, Luke is definitely a great GM, refreshing change from the idiots who believe in hack and slash like it is a religion or the ever-popular read from the module and hope the players don't steer off from what you want to do kind of attitude.

My friends and I have been making yearly pilgramages to GenCon for several years now, and we play in a lot of games every year.
The Burning Wheel session I played blew the fucking head off any other game I've ever played at a con.
What can I say about this game? What made it better?
Well Luke is some kind of role-playing dynamo, that makes the players a little better just from the osmotic uptake of his enthusiasm.
So, Good GM. Check.
There was a decided lack of asshat players in the session. In fact the session I played in had some of the best players I've had the pleasure to sit around a gaming table with. That makes an enormous difference, possibly even greater than the GM (no slight intended to Luke).
Good Players. Check.
The scenario was so freaking freeform it was awesome. We just ran in whatever direction we wanted, and here is the kicker, it totally worked. It's not like most modules, where if you run in a different direction than the module is written everyone can tell. This was a fully fleshed out session.
Good Scenario. Check.
All in all, as my first Burning Wheel game I played in, it was superb! Makes me wish more people (anyone) played it around here.
So Kudos to Luke for the Game and a Brilliant session, and kudos to the players for a phenomonal job playing their characters.

I was one of the folks who came to the con with TDR, and I second everything he just said: this was a mindblowingly good game. We couldn't have asked for a better GM, or a better group of folks to sit around the table with.
