The rules for using shields in R&C say you can only use them if you're not firing that volley and they can increase your level of cover by one step and only if the shield dice aren't less than your opponent's weapon's VA.

I'm guessing this is assuming you're using a two-handed ranged weapon.

What about with thrown weapons? If I can have my shield out while swinging an axe at someone in Fight is there any reason I can't have it up to protect myself while I'm getting ready to throw my axe in R&C? Or would that break things too much?

Why must you try to add more exceptions to the exceptions?

Because I'm an engineer and like things needlessly complicated? :)

Not really a big deal, I was just looking for any advantage I could squeeze out after nearly getting my ass handed to me by someone with a better ranged weapon, higher reflexes, and higher speed multiplier in R&C. Luckily I managed to get a Steel Close to work for me (barely).

It certainly wouldn't break the game, but I don't think it's necessary.
