So, my character took a Mortal Wound tonight (ouch) and I wanted to make sure I've got things down for everything involved in recovering from it.

First, I spent the Persona for the Will to Live.

Next, I have to be treated before I can make a recovery test. The GM said yes to the treatment (I was captured and the NPC's want me alive).

To recover I have to make an Ob 6 Health Test for the first stage. The text states ths stage usually lasts 4-24 months. Below that I see the exact time can either be determined by the GM or a random die roll -- what have other people done for this?

After this, I have to recover from a Traumatic Wound, then Severe Wound, all the way down to a Superficial. At this point, I just have to worry about recovery right? That is, there's no subsequent treatment tests to be made? So, any failed health tests towards the traumatic/severe/midi/light/superficial follow the rules for failing those specific recovery tests, right?

Also, suppose I fail more than one of those tests. How will that work as far as permanently losing dice, since you're not recovering from multiple wounds, but the same one through multiple stages? That is, after the first stage, I'm considered to have a Traumatic Wound (-4D); say, I fail that test. After the full amount of time, I'll only recover 2D and the other 2 are subtracted from an appropriate stat. After that, I have to recover from a Severe Wound (-3D). If I fail that, do I I lose an additional die (or 2) from an appropriate stat? And so on?

Thanks.

You and your GM should also read this:

Thanks! I'd seen that before, but completely forgot about it.

So, to make sure I'm reading that right, with the optional rule, there's only one recovery test to make for the Mortal Wound? If I fail it, I get a trait (cost 1 + MoF) + a Mortally Wounded in the <location> trait. If I make the recovery test, I only get the Mortally Wounded trait?

Yep. The other way works, too, but is a lot more fussy. Although in the future you may want to try for a complication first!

Actually, we'd already talked about the possibility of complications. At the beginning of the session we were fully expecting the other PC to be in very dire straits, and we were discussing possible outcomes.

Unfortunately our BW-fu was weak and we couldn't find the stuff for complications anywhere. At which point we decided it must be an optional rule that was on the boards, but not published. Then, at the end of the session when we were handing out Artha, we managed to find the bit about complications.

Oh well. I've never had to deal with Mortal Wound before, so I really don't mind. That and we found a cool way to keep the story going while my PC is bed-ridden.

Mortal Wounds can be really fun. They change your character. When you over come, you feel like you've really lived through it!

That's why I'm pretty excited about it. And it's taking things into a completely different and unexpected direction, which is really awesome!

One more followup: With the optional rule, no matter how long it takes to recover, is the PC pretty much considered to be out of commission/incapacitated for the entire time?

Only when one or more of his stats are taxed to 0.

I didn't think there was any tax associated with Mortal Wound. Just whatever penalties might get applied depending on how treatment/recovery go.

I believe so, yes.
