Considering the soothing blue color, I am forced to assume that SSS08 is a game set in the late '70's, possibly (though I'm forced to not get my hopes up too much) dealing with driving cabs or maybe bar management. Burning Shots? Burning Checkers? The possibilities are endless.

The board was sucking sloughwater when I was trying to post. The posting attempt errored out. I went to another tab and refreshed the thread and the post wasn't there. Then I tried again, a couple times, checking with the other tab. Eventually even just viewing the thread failed so I went away to let it sort out it's issues. ;) Looks like it's staightened out this morning thoug.

P.S. Saphim, the Wiki link is different from that page. Anyway I'm just using my browser history though you can figure out where you are going to go from the blue page if you've got your status line on and you watch that.

Ok, here's some preorder news:

SSS 08 will be revealed and launched next Tuesday, July 1st, midday -- during the EST work day. The exact time will be announced next Monday.

The preorder will run from July 1st to August 1st -- maybe up until Gen Con, we'll see.

Preordered books will be signed and hand numbered by me -- 001 to 200.
Preorders are limited to 200 books. That's right. After 200 books, preorders are over!

Preordered books cost $25 plus shipping.

There is a sweet limited edition preorder t-shirt for this book. The t-shirt costs $20. It will only be available during the preorder period. If you have any doubt about how sweet our t-shirt deals are, ask the lucky few got the black tengus from the Blossoms preorder.

Preorders ship August 18th-25th. We ship in the order received. So if you order first, you'll get your book first.

Preorders will NOT be available at Gen Con. We will NOT have signed and numbered copies at Gen Con. We WILL have regular edition of these books for sale at Gen Con.

There are NO PDFs of this book available. Ever. Do not ask.

The book is 296 pages, digest-sized. Art for this book includes a cover by Ian Miller and interiors by Chris Moeller, Richard Luschek, Kurt Komoda, Kev Sather, Jenn Rodgers and Jordan Worley among others.

Well, I've Googled all the artists, noted the proximity to the Mouse Guard RPG's (ahem) rumored release and sniffed around for any other hints -- I got nothing.

From Luke's solitary hint that I've read, blue doesn't seem right for Mouse Guard, and besides the page count is wrong. My detectoring skills are clearly inadequate.

The Tolkien Bestiary. I stared at it for 20 years. When I decided to publish, I said "I am going to hire that guy to do a cover for me one day."

Check!

Also, the shirts will most likely be American Apparels. AA has gotten better with sizes, but they might be a little small. My AA mediums from four years ago are smaller than my AA smalls now!

Luke doesn't release PDFs of core books (aside from a free sample chapter or two). It's just settings that show up in full PDF.

it can only be...

...the ADVENTURE BURNER!

Z-Dog
06-27-2008, 10:12 AM
I'm guessing the Magic Burner. Man, the artists lined up for the book are awesome. Looking forward to finding out what it is and getting my hands on my 2nd BW T-Shirt.

And, of course, I suspect there's a lot of people around here that did a playtest early this year that are snickering and holding their breaths. Bastards. ;)

Dwight
06-27-2008, 10:25 AM
My guess is a 'campaign burner'** with magic and 'adventure' and setting and everything rolled into it. Because really magic == setting for fantasy, it's what differentiates fantasy from the 'real' world. So the fit seems pretty natural. Only 3 days till we find out I guess.

EDIT: ** I guess you could call it a premise burner?

I´ll be depressed for the rest of the summer if I miss this preorder. I missed Falling Blossoms last year because I away on vacation and that made me very very sad.

Luck seems to be on my side so far because I thought I would have to work overtime today as usual and miss the release, but luckily I got called in yesterday to close the restaurant and got today off instead. Yay! So now I´ve spent an entire afternoon waiting, rereading threads (and feeling guilty for never posting anything) and caressing my numbered copies of the core books and BE.

On the other hand, Luke and BWHQ should be proud that it did sell out, and so quickly. BW is a great system, and I think it is slowly getting out into the larger community and being appreciated "in the trenches", even with all the negativity on some forums ("too indie" or "not indie enough").

Bury them in four remote locations around the globe to be found by following a series of cryptic riddles.

Alternatively, hollow out three of them and replace their insides with a deadly scorpion and then let volunteers pick from the four.

David Artman
07-10-2008, 02:34 PM
Throw them on eBay with a $25 reserve, and use the profits to throw a launch party for yourselves and the volunteers. Just be sure each is a single auction (so folks know which number they're getting), and don't list a Buy It Now price.

I, for one, would be curious to see what a signed (197 - 200) MaBu would go for, while the frenzy is high. And it seems the only fair way to let folks have a shot at one of four books--another "launch time" doesn't seem worth it and would be a bit unfair because irrelevancies like Internet latency and PC speed makes a BIG difference in being 1 of 4 (as opposed to 1 of 200, which took hours to resolve; 1 of 4 will take about 3 minutes).

Bury them in four remote locations around the globe to be found by following a series of cryptic riddles.Shit, missed this reply.

Actually, I think GeoCaching them would be hotness. You'd have to be VERY clever with the clues, and try to site them in locations where you have a concentration of customers (check your sales records). But it would be novel....

Besides the above mentioned special request by Mr. Chokey due to circumstances, Luke's said that they starting shipping after coming back from GenCon. Given that a 4-day convention normally means 6-8 hours sleeping out of 100+ hours ;) exact timing of when they start this week is up in the air.

I hate shipping. Dro and I are retards.

We forgot to sign a few of the international customs forms.
We tried to meekly retrieve them from the bin. No one could help us until a supervisor appeared. He seemed polite and well spoken. It turned out he was Post Satan. He explained while holding one of our flat rate envelopes:

"This is no longer a flat rate envelope. This has a bulge in it. It has a t-shirt in it, doesn't it? Let's take this over to the machine and see how much postage it requires."

My jaw bounced against my sternum, but I quickly recoverd. I continued smiling and nodding, hoping this would turn out for the better.

After some noodling with the machine, it turns out that the postage is just fine.

"Well, there is some leeway, some give, for these types of packages."

He then proceeds to write on the package in neat script, "Verified postage on automatic postage machine." He then deftly draws an arcane symbol.*

"Let me go back and get your international packages." He returned a moment later with dear Claus Jacobsen's package. It contained one book wrapped in bubblewrap.

Post Satan continued, "Oh yes. Hm. This isn't an envelope any more either. You see, it's kind of soft." His maniples pressed the package like a roll of Charmin.

"Yes," I responded. "It's got bubblewrap around a book. It's an international order." I hoped my simple explanation might placate Post Satan. It did not.

"Well, I'm afraid it's not a flat rate envelope any more."

"That's funny, because I've shipped hundreds of these packages from this post office."

"Oh well, that's odd. We get a lot of angry customers coming in with returned packages, wanting to know the reason. Well, it's like that guy with that pair of sneakers on the plane. He ruins one good pair of sneakers and it ruins it for the rest of us!"†

At this point, my jaw was bouncing against the hard marble floor. My eyes were pleading with Dro to leap from behind and attack Post Satan so I could flee. Alas, he didn't see me.

"If you'll just take your package to the window. They'll weigh it as a package. We have a very short line now. We have a bunch of good clerks on."

In awe at the powers of Post Satan, I glided into the line.

Pray for your packages, little children. We dropped off 34 more. They are in the clutches of Post Satan.

*I am not making this up!

†I swear he said this.

My last challenging test at the Farley Post Office was when one of the automated machines screwed up printing a certified mail label. I had to deal with Post Demons until I worked my way up to Post Satan. Thankfully, I have a call-on, so I was able to make that test.

Your naivete is charming. In Hell, who's the boss?

Having gotten several USPS employees "Leave without pay for disciplinary reasons" over such violations...

You just need to go to the city or state postmaster's office, and talk to the mail fraud unit, pointing out the employee was trying to defraud you by charging excess postage.

Last I checked, the Flat Rate envelope didn't have to be flat... merely sealed in the correct spot, to get the flat rate. That was 2 months ago.

Correction; that was 2 minutes ago:
http://pe.usps.gov/text/imm/immc2_013.htm#ep1893258

From the sound of it, you got robbed by a postal employee.

The USPS tracking works on pickup and delivery, and not really any stops in between. I'm presuming Luke dropped these off, so no "pickup" scan, and I guess when the USPS hands these off to your local carriers they don't get a "delivered" scan.

Also, Dwight, you are now at the mercy of Canada Post. Those guys are a menace.

But a gentle, bumbling menace. 199/200 just arrived in New Philadelphia, Ohio. It came wrapped in an uncut, unattached Magic Burner cover. My friend's copy, 47, didn't come with one, so I'm thinking it's an extra. Thanks, Luke! According to this uncut cover, the shade of blue is Pantone Reflex Blue C. :)

#81 and #61 (mine and Devin's respectively) showed up in exceptionally damp Seattle. Mine appears to have come with a backup cover as well, presumably in case something happens to my first one. It looks really good, can't wait to have a bit more time so I can really dig into it.

It killed me to read that 'finding useful and timely information' using your Bureaucracy skill in the BW char burner was Ob 7 or 8.

The real question is does the spread of EDRMSs increase or decrease this!

Was wearing my awesome Magic Burner t-shirt tonight and a friend of mine complimented it a couple times saying how cool he thought it looked. So the t-shirts have a rocking design even to people that know nothing about Burning Wheel. Just thought I'd share!

Figures. A couple of days after a "3 month" work project, with a deadline of the end of September, kicked off for me #69 (and #68) arrived. (http://w537.photobucket.com/pbwidget.swf?pbwurl=http://w537.photobucket.com/albums/ff333/DwightF69/08d7d67e.pbw)

P.S. There was weeks of special grooming techniques along with technological trickery that went into preparation for that photo series. :) I'm also wearing the Shud'up And Wizard T-shirt but the lighting in here doesn't show it off very well so I didn't bother to stand up for it.

(For Photo Booth you can set "auto flip" in the Edit menu. No idea why it is not the default.)

For easier identification of the nubs? :) I assume it is so that it acts like the user looking into a mirror, which most people are used to. Thanks for the tip though. I've never used Photobooth before (my son's computer, though he uses it a ton). I figured there was a setting somewhere but thought it was oddly appropriate for this. ;)
