So recently I had read a lot about the old school Traveller system and how characters could actually die during creation. As a character gen fiend, this I had to see and I went to GenCon looking for the book but was denied. Anyway, a week or so ago, a couple of friends picked it up for my from the FLGS and we've rolled up a couple characters.

The later books that expanded character gen sort of have a Lifepath-ish feel. You roll to determine what Office the character is assigned to and then yearly to determine what they were doing. You roll to determine if they were decorated, promoted, learned skills, etc. but it builds a background without you having to write anything.

For example, for one year you might have: Special Mission, learned Streetwise, Pistol, Promoted to Journeyman.

And based on your random skill rolls, you get a flavor for what kind of mission/life your character lived. I just found it interesting in that it does what the lifepaths do in a sense - and character creation is a blast even though you actually don't pick a single freakin' thing (no skills, no attributes, no nothin', just your lucky 2d6).

Folks compare BW and Traveller all the time. I've never played Traveller, don't think I ever did more than flip through.

The comparison is a non-starter in my mind for the egregious reason you mentioned above: random character creation. I can almost understand this method when you're just creating the numbers for your guy, but using it for his history (as the primary method of generation) just seems demonic.

BW is all about choices, and thus you chose what you want to be. No freakin random rolls. Gads.

"Yeah, I'm really jonsing for that Han Solo type space smuggler."

"Roll, you need an 8."

"Shit. 7. Ah, you're a desk clerk."

"Great. Can I reroll?"

"No, sorry, there are witnesses. ::snickers to himself::"

Yeah, that's kind of how it went for Raemos. Hehe.

He ended up with a 42 year old retired Sales clerk who had been fired at 22 from a large merchant corporation and rehired by a smaller one. His "heroic character" had spent his whole life eeking through middle management as a Broker along the standard trade routes (he just couldn't roll out of the 4-8 range). It was kind of like Glengary Glen Ross in Space.

Meanwhile, Wuxing cranked out a 46 year old, highly decorated Brigadier General.

Where's the problem?

When I first got back to town a buddy of mine had just seen the first 3 seasons of the Sopranos and he ran a game inspired by it using ...Battlelords of the 23rd Century.

I made up this vile alien who ate humans and rolled on this table of fate that we had the option of rolling on.

I gained a hefty Law school and so I became a cannabilistic lawyer.

It was beautiful.

I never want to play that game again but that roll set the game on fire for me.

You just made me spit water all over my keyboard.

It was worth it, though. :D
