There's a small con in the area coming up, ShaunCon (http://www.shauncon.org) and I'm planning to run The Gift. Currently there's only two players signed up for the game. And it's possible more will sign up closer to the con and maybe even the day of.

But to do a little planning ahead and I'm trying to decide what to do in the case of a low turnout. For now, I'm planning to be optimistic and be ready to run The Gift, but just in case I'll have The Sword as a back up, which I've run before, so I won't really be wasting time prepping two different demos.

So, this leads to some questions:

1. What's a good minimum for The Gift? Can 4 players work (I'm assuming less than this definitely wouldn't be that great)?

2. If I only had 4 people, would I be better off running The Sword?

3. Any insights on what people's reactions might be to having to play something different than was originally offered? For the most part, I don't think this'd be a huge deal. A demo is a demo, but I could understand someone being really excited about the whole Elves vs. Dwarves thing and not caring much about the sword-MacGuffin (then again, the Sword can easily become about Elf vs. Dwarf).

The Gift PDF gives instructions for how to play it with 4-8 people. Its just a matter of knowing which characters to keep and which to put aside.

That being said, I think its fine to give the players the choice between The Sword and The Gift when they show up. Let them make the call.

True. I'm thinking if there's less than 4, The Sword will probably be better, and if there's more than 4, I'll do The Gift. If I have exactly 4, I'm not sure. There's just so much room for awesome in The Gift, I'd be worried how only 4 people will work. Then again, I haven't ran it before, so it could be just fine.

But giving them the choice at the table is probably the best bet. The time slots are pretty big, so there should be plenty of time for discussing that before hand.

I think a lot of it is just nerves on my part, since I've never gone to a Con (even though it's pretty small), let alone run anything at one.

If it comes down to it and you only have two players this scenario works pretty well:

It's not specific to BW but BW would rock it pretty hard.

Dude you're in my town! ShaunCon is this weekend isn't it? I'll see if I can get in your game!

The official Burning Wheel policy when confronted with a con full of miniatures and "living" campaigns is to gather an angry mob and force the con staff to clear a theater for you to run games in.

Sure, as long as you have the will and your mob the anger.
