This is a pre-gen character for a BW event I'm running at NC Gameday
Gaerron was born to a family of trappers in the hilly eastern forests of the Empire of Brynn. He grew up intending to follow the family tradition when a particularly brutal winter during his 13th year left his family short of money, unable to pay their taxes to their liege, a baron of House Drake. To reconcile their debt, Gaerron’s father sent him off to join the army of House Drake, a particularly powerful and warlike Great House, for a bond of service of 10 years. Starting out as a runner, he rose through the ranks, first becoming a spearman and finally a sergeant commanding an Arm (squad) of 10 spearmen. He was a veteran of many battles and witnessed much bloodshed during the course of House Drake’s campaigns that led to the swearing of allegiance to House Drake by the Great Houses Warshaw, Kerrick, and Ryme. He even lost an eye in battle.
By the time his bond of service had concluded, Gaerron was weary of the world, and disgusted by man’s capacity to do violence to man. No longer feeling clean enough to return home, he began to wander, looking for meaning in all the suffering. One day he wandered into a church where he challenged the Dyar (priest) to explain it all. The two debated points of faith and philosophy all night. By the morning the Dyar had convinced Gaerron to make a pilgrimage to Mount Aethalon, the holiest site of the Imperial Faith. (Mt. Aethalon is where Haeleron, patron god of Brynn, slew the Demon and Ascended to the Heavens.) He told Gaerron that on his pilgrimage, he would find meaning.
It took Gaerron a year to journey to Mount Aethalon, but the Dyar was correct. During his pilgrimage he relied upon the kindness of strangers, and he found it. He found that people were fascinated and impacted by his tales of the folly of war, which in turn he found cathartic. In his travels he also had many opportunities to use his herbalist and medical skills he learned in his years as a soldier on people in want. He found this rewarding and gratifying. By the time he reached the Grand Temple of Ascension at the summit of Mount Aethalon he discovered that the Dyar was right. He realized that he had found some good to come out of all the horror he witnessed. He realized that the good he had done on his pilgrimage would not have happened without the horrors of war shaping him. Though still scarred, he felt a sense of peace. He felt a sense of faith. In the sanctuary of the Grand Temple, he vowed to dedicate his life to Haeleron.
Gaerron returned to the church to thank the Dyar who had set him on his path of redemption, the Dyar whose name he never learned. That man’s name was Tylin Naesean, and that church was the Imperial Church in Graymoor. Tylin took Gaerron into his service as an Acolyte of the Imperial Church of Haeleron. Gaerron is quite content now, and, despite his age, he is a promising acolyte. He and Tylin still spend time discussing doctrine and philosophy, though the conversations are a lot less heated. Tylin has also spent a lot of time teaching Gaerron the Lore of Demons. Though he finds it a fascinating subject, he’s not exactly sure why he’s doing it. Perhaps time will tell…
Gaerron is of average height with a fit frame. His eye color is blue and short cropped graying hair that makes him look older than his years. He lost his right eye in battle and has a large scar running down the right side of his face. He wears an eye patch.
