View Full Version : Observations on character creation in Blossoms

Shortly after I got my copy of Blossoms, I flipped to the lifepaths and immediately became entranced by the blind swordsman lifepath. An idea sprang into my mind of a swordsman in his thirties who had lost his sight and his lord all in one fateful, horrible day and was undeterred by his sightlessness in his quest for vengeance. Then I looked at the LP requirements. Yikes! It's hard to make that concept work. The best two I could manage was: Born Warrior/Provincial Kohai/Bushi/Monk/Wandering Priest/Masseur/Blind Swordsman/Ronin which is an eight-lifepath, 46-year-old character or Born Warrior/Provincial Kohai/Monk/Sohei/Wandering Priest/Masseur/Blind Swordsman, Which is a seven lifepath monster. Neither character is particularly connected back to the warrior LP they last took. That really rammed home just how restrictive the lifepaths are; this was in no way, shape, or form an open society. The lack of leads in general is staggering. Just getting into the city setting if you started as a warrior is a bit of a feat in and of itself. Very interesting.

Yeah, Zatoichi was something like City Born, Performer, Masseur, Criminal, Blind Swordsman.

I do love how the rules in the various BW iterations reinforce the setting.
I don't have Blossoms (yet); is there a purchasable Blind Trait?

Yes, 4pts.
It's also the required trait for the Masseur LP. The trait works a bit differently than the one in the CB, in general, Blossoms has its own skill and trait lists that supersede those found elsewhere.

A bit off topic, and a bit anachronistic, but the movie "Love and Honor" (http://www.amazon.com/Love-Honor-Yoji-Yamada/dp/B0012SY0E6) is a great story about a samurai that becomes blind after tasting his lord's food.

Ah! The third movie in Yoji Yamada's samurai trilogy. Haven't seen it yet, but the first two movies, Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade, are absolutely amazing!

His!
& what about Zatoichi's latest incarnation: Takeshi Kitano? The movie is quite interesting & adventurous - taking the story to unexpected places - it even features a dance number (& you know there ain't that many in japanese movies)!!!
Solid entertainment thru & true.

It's a "thematic" trilogy. They don't have characters in common or anything like that. But they are awesome.

That'll do! They are available in Australia so they are on the list! :)
