Can Faithful be gained as a trait during play? I assume yes, if there's a corresponding Belief which is voted into trait-land at the end of a campaign.

Yup! The Faith trait operates like other traits in this regard. Make sure to reread Changing Traits and Earning New Ones on page 61 of the system book. Also, something new since Classic, check Evolving on page 71 of the system book.

As per those rules, I'd want to see a Deeds point spent in pursuit of a faith-focused Belief in the course of play before I'd agree to vote for the Faith trait for someone.
My character for an upcoming short campaign may attempt to gain the Faithful trait though play. A lofty goal for what might be three game sessions, but regardless I like the idea as a roleplaying hook. Does anyone care to share an example of how gaining Faithful through play was handled by his or her group? I am interested in both in-game actions on behalf of the player and how the trait voting was handled.

Fourth Horseman earned it in play once. Lots and lots of praying and faith-based zealotry.

Kublai essentially earned it in play recently for his priest with lost faith. Maybe he can talk about his road to redemption.

I would vote Faithful to a player that began with or opened Doctrine and Rituals, had a Belief about finding God, and spent a Deeds point on that Belief.

The skills might not be a requisite to some, but it makes great sense to me.

I don't know how'd you do it in three sessions, though! You'd need to start with a Deed point, use it in session 1 or 2, and - before anything - have all the other players agree that it's possible and immediately effective upon reaching certain objectives, like those mentioned above.

Otherwise, you'd have to wait for a Trait Vote, which typically happens AFTER campaigns are over.

I have done trait votes when chapters come to a close, rather than when the entire campaign is over.

I'm guessing he means short ones like what Daniel is describing.

Oh, Lost Faith could be cool. I'll have to look at my books when I get home.

Please feel free to ignore the constraints of my upcoming game situation. I'm more generally interested in the topic of gaining Faithful in play.

I would basically want to see what Kublai mentions, and it would have to happen over a couple or more trait votes, as a char trait slowly gets elevated to faithful and/or ones like tonsured.

I don't remember the specific details, but one of my players earned Faith. It took her one arc to earn the Believer trait and one arc to then earn Faith. There were a lot of cool little moments of fervent prayer, obeying doctrine, struggling with her new-found belief to the point of almost losing it, a few rough failures and even some triumphant successes. By the end of that second arc, we all felt that she had really earned it.
