Brabo wasn't like other trolls. He could speak more than three words at a timeand he wanted to know the names of things before he smashed them. Brabo was very unpopular and so settled on the idea of becoming a brige-haunt. Unfortunately, all the good bridges had man-troops on them or larger trolls under them. So Brabo had to settle for a little used stone bridge over a long ravine.
Now it just so happened that this bridge was a favorite of those too poor to pay the imperial tolls or too wanted by the King. Due to that and the placement of the temples in the area, that meant most of the traffic were travelling priests and nuns. Brabo hated them. They never had anything worth taking and they didn't even taste good. Brabo started to ignore them whenever he heard them coming.
So the word spread that there was a troll under the old bridge but he didn't attack clergy. The bridge was busier than ever as everyone started dressing in clerical robes and using the old bridge to avoid the tolls. Brabo was in hell.
Then one day as a pair of monks were crossing the bridge, Brabo heard the first man words than made any sense to him. "You know brother, life truly is pain." Brabo's ears perked up and he listened and he understood. Or thought he did anyway.
He climbed up on the bridge before the cowering monks and roared. "Tell me more!"
Thus Brabo became the first troll to extort words instead of gold. Those that could teach him got to go. Those that couldn't Brabo ate. He had never been happier. At least until the King's knights came to build a toll station over the now popular bridge.
In desperation Brabo started hunting the man villages as much for words as food. He had a good system going. Brabo would grab the local priest, make the villiage give him food to let him go, and made the priest tell him more words while he waited.
More and more soldiers came though and while he got bigger and tougher fighting them, Brabo knew a losing battle when he saw it. He fled into the mountain and was swiftly captured by the forces of the legion.
At first Brabo was bullied and jeered at for being a 'smart-guy', but Brabo's Life is Pain philosophy swiftly became popular. The Troll Warloard immediately realized that Brabo's talking was good for discipline and morale and as a mark of favor made Brabo one of his Ironshields.
