Hey all! I finished reading the entire chapter for Positioning and Ranged Combat today (my eyes are burning, coincidentally...), and I've only got one question for whoever is kind enough to respond to it:

What happens after a character gets out of firing range completely? The rules say that, basically, you can't get shot at after you get out of range (a step above extreme range), so what's done once one character gets away? Does the contest of maneuvers and Speed tests keep going, or is it only resumed once one character is close enough to the escaping one to resume the positioning battle?

All help is appreciated. Really! :)

My book's not in front of me, so this may be completely wrong, but I seem to recall that once you've moved out of range totally, the R&C conflict is over. Either call it a day, or have a versus Speed test for a final chase scene.

I didn't see any rules governing what happens in such a scenario, so your suggestion seems plausible.

I'd love to hear from others as well, though, to see if there is an actual rule that I happened to miss.

I can't remember what page it's on, but I read about it last night. If someone moves out of range in RnC, that ends the conflict. The same with Fight! -- if someone moves beyond the Outside distance, it goes to RnC.

Hmm... now I can't find that reference. Maybe I'm imagining it.

It's a tad more explicit in the Fight! description that Fight! is over. In R&C it says they have "escaped" but implied in that is that R&C is over. EDIT: Oh wait no, I mispoke. It's in there the sentence before. Reread the Out of Range description on page 128.

A chase scene/Test might be appropriate or might not, depending on the environment and what you want to emphasize in the game. If it is a PC running it's GM call if the NPC tries to pursue. If it's an NPC running the player needs to decide if they want to pursue and try reestablish combat.

Odie summarized it nicely above. Of course, Dwight's got to flaunt his page numbers.
