I had a player who fights with a sword (long) and a small sword (short). He was at optimal for his sword (and hence lunging for his small sword) and had a Close scripted. He wanted to position with his sword, but move into optimal for his small sword. I ruled that if he wanted to do that he would have to position with his small sword. However, since he was using his sword that volley (and just wanted to be closer for later) I could understand where he was coming from. Was I right?
Yeah, I would have had him position with the small sword. That's what he was positioning for!

That's what I was trying to get him to do, but he was afraid of giving his opponent an advantage due to longest weapon.

I would think that if he's trying to close to the point where his short sword is effective, his opponent SHOULD qualify for longest weapon.
You've got two possible interpretations, and they're both somewhat covered by the rules. However, one gives the player an advantage, and the other actually makes sense.

However, the I Position with my Lance ... rule would suggest that since he is using his long sword this volley, he should use that to position with.
Still, I think positioning with the short sword is the better option.
