I have begun my first week's training for my new job as Night Supervisor of a university library.

Hence:

Books contain power. Tomes can contain incantations that call deadly spirits that reside in rocks and streams, angry ghosts that hunger for life or demons that scratch against the other side of reality. Letters can kill, maim, imprison, destroy and erase a being from existence. Pages have a will all their own, turning before the eyes they know will read their inner meanings.

You work in one of the finest libraries in the world, the largest collection of books known to exist with extensive collections ranging from magic to history to lost empires. When Wizards die they almost always leave their collections here in their will, knowing they will be kept and studied in the ages to come by the finest scholars in the world.

This will be a game using Burning Wheel's wonderful magic systems from the Summoning to the Abstractions.

Gather the players and decide the following, much in the tradition of an Ars Magica covenant:

What is the name of the library and whom does the library serve?

What is your character's role in the library?

Why does your character choose a life filled with danger, surrounded by knowledge?

This might just be my next campaign.

all right, here is a concept i cam up with:

Mater Verdorth was certainly weird, but not insane, though many people calle dhim that. It was years ago that he had discoverd the ancient text that told of the banishment of great evil. From the texts, Verdorth derived quickly that this evil was not banished forever and bound to return at some point. From that moment one his career took a turn. He preached of the chaos this evil would bring and tried to convince his colleages to help him fight it. But no one belived him.
Only his young apprentice, who had always seen Verdorth as a father, stood by him.
Verdorth changed his focus in magic. In his earlier years he was open to all kind of magic and even learned some summoning, but now he only concentrated on order. He learned to summon seraphim, get them to help him in his task. He learned to command the power of the light and the order. To banish demons, turn undead and undo chaos all around him.
His lifestyle also changed, the little messy wizward had transformed into a fanatic of order. Only one thing he was sloppy about: His apprentice.
Verdorth had taught him the basics in magic, and had taught him about the great evil that would come. The apprentice believed all of this, but he thought there must be a different way to deal with the matter.
He believed that raw magic, unformed by spells held the potential to deal with the threat.
In one of his studies, the apprentice once stubbled about a half sinshed abstraction.
He was amazed by the potential and the adaptability this writing held.
H esoon ommitted the conventional techings he could learn and searched out everthing he could learn about abstractions.
His belief was easy: Abstractions held an adabtability that usual spells could not even reach.
Should one know enough facets of this raw power, one could master every situation.

While master Verdorth did certainly not approve entirely of his Apprentice passion, he also did not hold him back. He had alrady taught him the basics, and he strongly belived that his apprentice should learn by himslef.

Master Verdorth travels, since. Looking for hints, clues and information about the threat that's bound to come to this world. His apprentice follows, assists him, does his duties. And through that gains access to some of the oldest libraries there are, studying books for more of this natural form of magic he attempts to master.

Ok, naturally my charackter would be the apprentice.
I don;t have my Charackter bruner with me right now, but I think you get the idea.
I wanted to give him one spell max, and have the rest be abstractions.
Wonder how it turns out.

Alright here is my concept, and being I’m not an experienced player, I have no clue how to make it work, but here it is anyway:

Fehler Manstrom was always considered unusual. He was the eldest son of King Konig Manstrom of the Kingdom of Gegen Zauberer. It was fairly prosperous empire. However, Fehler was born during an eclipse and had green eyes, so was thus always viewed as some kind of Demon Spawn. None-the-less King Konig raised Fehler to be his heir to the throne. However, once Fehler reached the age of 14, he began to show special talents and skills, that is, the ability to cast spells. Despite his love for his son, King Konig was given no other choice but to banish his son (apparently this kingdom does not accept magic). SO thus he was cast out into the world and has since declared that he will eventually have his revenge upon his father and his kingdom.

After his banishment, Fehler found an old wizard by the name of Vorhang Einer, who, in his old age was so desperate to have an apprentice and teach someone in his skills before he died, was blinded to the fact that Fehler was so driven by rage, passion, and the thirst for revenge. In his studies, Fehler came across a short, old, and vague writing about Ikitome Nekanavious. The Green Book. It was thought to be destroyed, but no one was quite sure on that fact. So thus, Fehler decided to take up the search to find it, looking at vast libraries for some clues to the location of the Green Book, and of how he can use it to have his ultimate revenge.

Because he is so driven by rage, most of Fehler’s magic is reckless. It is strong, very strong, but uncontrolled and thus potentially dangerous to himself just as much as any enemy. As of recently he has become quite impatient of his search and his quest for vengeance, and is easier to anger and irritate.

So what I was thinking was that I would do Noble birth and some other noble lifepath, such as Page or Student. But then I can’t really seem to find a lifepath that quite fits the banishment, so there I am uncertain. After that I guess I’ll just do Sorcerer’s apprentice. I’m not really certain, so feedback is much wanted.

Hi Dem,

Personally, I'd choose Cultist from Outcast. But nearly any LP in Outcast can represent exile. You could also hit City for Sorcerer (if you'd taken Apprentice) -- the story being that you fled to another foreign city to take up your studies.

Are you going play in Paka's game?

Alright, I think I understand that, but I'm not quite sure about how to do my magic. What I really want to kind of have is that his spells only really work when he gets mad, and he creates blasts and stuff like that. Or at least, only his good/great spells work when he is pissed off (which is generally all the time). But I'm not quite certain that would work at all.

you need to use the Monster Burner's Monstrous Magic Section. Fire Breathing or Psychic Powerz sound like what you're after. If you don't have it, check it out.
