Just curious, Luke - did you come across Flight of Dragons by itself, or were you introduced to it by the old Rankin & Bass cartoon?
The one that was a bizarre combination of the dragons for Flight of Dragons with a plot taken from the Dragon and the George? Wee, I used to love that movie.
Confused the hell out of me when I started reading the Dragon and the George . . .
On a related note, have you read Dragons and Unicorns: A Natural History?

Hi Christian,
My mom gave me The Flight of Dragons as a birthday present when I was 7 or 8. It was literally too frightening for me to look at (and too complex for me to understand). It's stayed with me all these years (and done me some good).
I've never seen the cartoon, though I hear it's nothing like either of it's inspirations.

It has been a long time since I've read the books (which I came across completely randomly, and was very suprised with there connection to the movie), and even longer since I've seen the movie - but I'm pretty sure the dragons did work like those in Flight of Dragons, and many of the characters and situations in the movie were taken from the the Dragon and the George. I'm not sure the movie would hold up without nostalgia on its side.
Both very cool books - I can't imagine what the impact of FoD would have been at such a tender age. Anyway, loved the FoD take on dragons, and the monster burner more generally. Though you WOULD need to be Beowulf (and have grey scaled power) to kill that sucker.

Never said it was supposed to be easy, merely possible.
Gray Power helps. Magic swords, too. But clever peasants can inflict enough Superficial wounds to harry him and drive him off.
Anyway, after rereading Flight of Dragons, I was completely inspired to do Dragon LPs. I've got some neat ideas. But they'll have to wait.

I'm rereading earthsea, just got to the part where Ged strikes his bargain with Yevaud...
Yevaud is fucking awesome. ::shivers::
Ged has Gray Sorcery. Fucking child prodigy!
I LOVE those books.
Ursula is dreamy.
