Here's a really nasty spell that was a bit difficult to work up. Luke, I'm not sure I used the Transmutative impetus correctly (or even if it can be combined with the Destroyer Impetus). I did not add the Earth Obstacle and Syllables to it, since Earth was already the Element of the spell.

Hail of Pluto's Hoard (Ob 5^, Syllables 24), If I should have added Earth to Transmutative, it should be (Ob 6^, Syllables 26)

Effect: The wizard transmutes Air into a hail of deadly and beautiful gems that continue to fall as long as the wizard sustains it. Damaging Effect Spell: Power = Will, +1 Power for every additional success. DOF.

Range: Sight
Area: Measured Area - 10s of Paces
Impetus: Destroyer/Transmutative
Element: Earth
Duration: Sustained

Element: Earth (Ob 1, Syllables 6)
Impetus: Destroyer (Ob 2, Syllables +5)
Impetus: Transmutative [Air] (Ob +3, Syllables +51)
Origin: Sight (Ob +4, Syllables +8 )
Duration: Sustained (Ob +2, Syllables +4)
Area of Effect: Measured Area - 10s of Paces (Ob +4, Syllables +12)

First Distillation: Sight/Measured Area
Earth (Ob 1, Syllables 6)
Destroyer (Ob 2, Syllables +5)
Transmutative [Air] (Ob +3, Syllables +51)
Sight-Measured Area (Ob +4, Syllables +10)
Sustained (Ob +2, Syllables +4)

Second Distillation: Earth/Transmutative
Earth-Transmutative (Ob 2, Syllables 29)
Destroyer (Ob 2, Syllables +5)
Sight-Measured Area (Ob +4, Syllables +10)
Sustained (Ob +2, Syllables +4)

Finalization:
Hail of Pluto's Hoard (Ob 5^, Syllables 24)

If you're transmuting air, you'll need the Air facet. Luke seems to be of the mind that all transmutative spells will require two element facets: one for the pre-state and one for the altered-state, even if they're the same facet! I disagree with this but he could care less!

Thanks! I actually spoke with Luke about it. I factored the Air Element into the Transmutative Ob and Syllables, so I think it's cool as is. 8)

Reading the description in the Rules, wouldn't this be the correct facet listing?

Element: Earth (Ob 1, Syllables 6)
Element: Air (Ob Ob2, Syl 4)
Impetus: Destroyer (Ob 2, Syllables +5)
Impetus: Transmutative [1+Air+Earth] (Ob +4, Syllables +58 )*
Origin: Sight (Ob +4, Syllables +8 )
Duration: Sustained (Ob +2, Syllables +4)
Area of Effect: Measured Area - 10s of Paces (Ob +4, Syllables +12)

*The obstacle of this facet is equal to 1 plus the Element being changed from and the Element being changed into.

Admitedly, the transmutative facet is the most confusing to understand as written, so I could be wrong.

I can definitely see that reading. Based on my conversation with Luke, I think it's already correct, but I wouldn't mind a definitive ruling!

Ha! I cornered Luke on this and he said "I have no idea."

Must be too busy on the Revision to even consider this knot!

From going over the Transmutative Impetus rules again, it's very clear that the Transmutative Impetus obstacle equals 1 + the target Element's Obstacle + the finished Element's Obstacle.

That would make your Transmutative Obstacle 1 + Air + Earth for a total of Ob 4.

How else could that be interpreted?

Then, I believe you will need both Element Facets in your Abstraction. How can you ensorcel Air without incorporating its Facet?

Yeah, I see what you're saying. By a strict reading of the rules you're definitely correct. I just got a slightly different call from Luke on IM. Personally, while I agree with you that the rules as written seem to indicate that you need to include both Elements, and also pay for both Elements as part of the Transmutive Impetus, I don't like it. I don't want to pay for two Elements twice. I'd rather give Transmutive a straight Obstacle and require both Elements to be included in the Abstraction.

I definitely agree with you there, Thor. I would like to see a straight Transmutative Obstacle, as well. The process of changing something is always the same I would think, yet it's the properties of the differing elements that makes it easier or harder to transmute.

Yup. As it is now, it's much easier just to create something from nothing than to change something into something else.
