Welcome, ye mortals, to the Arena! Here ye shall pit your finest champion against warriors from around the world in a one-on-one fight to the death.

The Burning Rules:

1) Champions must be 4 lifepaths or less. Any lifepaths in the Revised Edition books (including Monster Burner) or official ones from this site are acceptable.

2) Champions may be Human, Dwarf, Elf, Orc, Great Wolf, Roden, or Dark Elf. NO TROLLS OR SPIDERS!

3) Champions may take any traits they desire from the books or from this Web site. Custom traits are allowable (See Monster Burner for mechanics), Referee approval is required!

4) Champions may be created with Grey stats and/or skills.

5) Champions may purchase mounts, but both combatants must agree to their use before the fight begins.

6) Champions may not have starting Artha.

7 ) Champions may not acquire Grey Damage through Precision Training, despite having the requisite Meditation, Philosophy, etc.

8) Sorcerous Champions may not have Instincts that allow spells to be already cast before the challenge begins thereby bypassing player agreement.

9) Sorcerer's may Abstract their own spells using the downloadable Abstraction PDF, but must get Referee approval before purchase!

10) Champions must be introduced into the Hall of Champions before they are allowed to challenge another.

11) The use of traits like Tainted Legacy to cheat is severely frowned upon. Referees should feel free to smack players upside the head if they try to tack "Spirit Nature" onto a character, and thereupon summarily reject their character.

12) Skills and Stats may not exceed exponent 6 unless specifically allowed by a trait. Attributes are exempt from this cap.

The Rules of Combat (for refereed matches):

1) Challenge an available Champion in the Hall of Champions by creating a new Topic - Call it something like "Tergo vs. Sammy."

2) Request an available Referee using a PM.

3) Once a Referee agrees, both Champions will PM the Referee their Character Sheets and First Exchange Scripts using the templates below.

4) The Referee rolls dice on behalf of both Champions. He will post the results of the First Volley within appropriate topic.

5) The participating Champions then have the option of Forfeiting actions before the next Volley is posted. The time between Volleys will be short and at the Referee's discretion.

6) If Hesitation occurs, the Referee will consult with the hesitating Champion for a proper reaction.

7) If scripting any Counter moves or Blocking Strikes, please include the split with the first number indicating the Block and the second number indicating the counter or strike. For example, if you are Counter-Striking, you would write 4/2: 4 for the Block, 2 for the Strike.

8 ) If using Artha to boost an Action, please indicate so in the Script. For Fate points, you simply write in a conditional. It will be used if any 6s come up. Persona points will be used no matter what, as well as Double Dice Deed points. Please indicate an intent to use Re-Roll Deeds points in the script. The referee will consult you on each action with the number of successes and then you can decide whether to use it or not.

9) Once all three Volleys have been posted, a new Script will be PM'd to the Referee and the process will begin again until someone dies.

10) By default, spells and songs will not be allowed to be cast before combat begins. However, with an agreement from both combatants, such preparation may be allowed.

11) By default, ranged weapons will not be allowed to be at-the-ready before combat begins. However, with an agreement from both combatants, such preparation may be allowed.

The Rules Of Combat (for non-refereed matches):

1) The same as the rules for refereed matches, only the two combatants use the "honor system" (and/or an online dice roller, to keep the honest honest) and adjudicate the match between themselves.

2) Scripts are posted using "invisible" text (text the same color as the background), and edited and "revealed" as the match progresses.

3) All rules discussions and/or debates are to be conducted in the commentary thread. Only scripts, rolls, results and color text goes in the fight thread.

4) If you plan to have a non-refereed bout, please post your character to the Hall of Champions. See posted characters for examples.

5) Don't cheat!

ASSORTED RULES:

Partial Armor:
In order to avoid Speed penalties, it is common to see Champions not take lower leg armor. In such cases, the armor dice for that location is divided in half and rounded up. For example, Plated Leather half-leggings would grant 2D of protection. The legs are considered 1 location, and so the unarmored shins may not be the subject of a Called Shot. See Pages 185-186 in your brown book.

Armor is fully repaired between fights.

All wounds are healed between fights.

4) Artha may be spent as follows:
1 Fate point will allow open-ended 6s.
1 Fate point will allow 1 failed die to be re-rolled if that test was open-ended to begin with.
1 Persona point will add one bonus die. Up to three can be spent this way on one test.
1 Deeds point will double the skill dice (before FoRKs or Persona dice are added) before a test is made.
1 Deeds point will allow all failed dice to be re-rolled.

7) Called Shots

All strikes default to the Chest of an opponent -- it will be assumed that combatants put their torso "on offer" as a target unless otherwise indicated.

To the Victor go the rewards!

When a Champion wins a Fight, he receives Artha:

1) For each fight he wins, he earns 1 Fate point.

2) For every 3 fights he wins, he earns 1 Persona point.

3) For every 5 fights he wins, he earns 1 Deeds point.

4) Defeated opponents may be looted at will!

Survive and Learn!

Advancement for Stats, Skills, and Attributes will be handled normally. You must keep track of advancement yourself.

1) You may only earn one test per skill/stat/attribute used in a Challenge. If you earned different types of tests (Routine, Difficult, or Challenging), choose one from among them. If you used your Sword Skill ten times in a combat earning all three types of tests, you may only choose one of them to count towards advancing the Sword skill.

2) Use the charts on pages 51-51 to determine the level of the test earned.

3) Any weapons not explicitly listed in the books must be cleared with a referee prior to starting a bout.

4) There is a 48-hour rule in effect on challenges. If the person that you challenge doesn't respond to you within 48 hours, you can assume that they defaulted and challenge someone else.

Rules Clarifications

1) Champions may not use Counters in conjunction with any other Special Move unless it's specifically listed in the Martial Art. For example, there will be no Counter-Push Kicks nor Counter-Great Pushes.

When PMing a Script, please indicate Character name and which Exchange it's for, ie "Kitchva, Exchange 2."

Remember to indicate any split dice from Counter-moves or Blocking Strikes. Also, indicate any important things like Casting Patiently or Carefully and Called Shots!

From a suggestion from Abzu and my own experience, I've added an "Intent" to the script below. By stating your intent in the Volley, a referee can better judge the results.

Use the template below for Scripting (minus example actions  ):

Volley 1:
Action 1: Strike
Action 2: Counter-strike 4/4
Movement: Close to Optimal
Speech: Ho there! Take that!
Intent: Attack my enemy!

Volley 2:
Action 1: Incant Spell - Spell Name, # of actions
Action 2: Finish Spell
Movement: Withdraw
Speech: Ala Kazzam!
Intent: Keep away from my opponent until my spell is finished!

Volley 3:
Action 1: Charge
Action 2: Blocking Strike 2/6 - Called Shot to the Head
Movement: Charge
Speech: Yyyyaaarrrrrggghhhh!
Intent: Full out attack!

Is there any reason that we shouldn't have multiple Champions in play?

Thomas

I think it comes down to managability. (Is that a word? It looks wierd to me.)

Without a limitation, people might get a bit out of hand and post half-a-dozen Champions each. Then it just becomes an exercise in character burning, which I didn't intend The Arena to become. By limiting it to one, you are saying, "Gentlemen! Behold! This is the best I could come up with and I'm sticking with him! Now DIE!"

From posts talking about people having multiple back-up Champions already, I feel the limitation has been justified.
