I read some previous advancment threads but not wanting to drag up an old thread (thank the forge for that habit) I created a new thread. I couldn't find the answer to my question in either the manual or in past threads so here goes.
Can higher difficulty tests count as lower difficulty tests? Does it down grade or count as more than one?
Example I earn a Challenging Test for my B2 Skill (doesn't matter what it is unless there's some relevance) and I already have a Challenging Test logged from a previous scenario. Can that Challenging test count as two routine test thereby advancing me?

Absolutely not! Abzu has made that PERFECTLY CLEAR in the face of my whining.

I understand not why. It makes sense to me that one can exceed ones expectations and still learn from it. Any test greater than the required test should go towards the advancement but ONLY if all required tests of the type in question have been met. As with the example in this post you already have MET the 1 challenging test requirement for advancing a B2 skill and need only 1 routine test.
What can I say? Luke's an Abzu. He's not flexible on this. And I do kind of understand where he's coming from. But take it up with him!

He's a vast underground fresh water ocean I get it, but what's that got to do with rules?

Sorry. Nerdnyc.com joke. On those forums, the filter changes the work 'dick' to Abzu.

Ahh we did something similar on my site's forums but we substituted a radom word with a random obsenity for komedy hijinks.
So Abzu: What's the deal on advancement?? Don't make me call the hotline! He he, inside joke.
I love this old saw! And no one ever likes my answers. Tonight, I'm in a giving mood. I shall tell you the Game Design reason!
::puts on game designer hat which he had just taken off::
::ahem::
You cannot trade out tests in Burning Wheel because BW does not want characters to advance by doing the same thing over and over again.
It is the intent of the design of these rules to force players to attempt a variety of actions with their characters.
We've found, through the course of six years of playtesting, that it works very well! Combined with the new artha rules, it's gold.

Ha! We have that one too. At least once a session, someone has to say:
"Hey! What's the difference between Cook and Cooking?"
To which the proper response is:
"Hell if I know! Call Luke at work!"
