Arakis, the desert planet, home to the freemen. To some, it is known as DUNE. (snicker)

It'll be interesting to see the Great Spiders in action, but I really think that Jack's pistol is a major advantage.
Edit: Now, with a Great Spider v. Kimdo match, my money would be on the arachnid.

We shall see. I think this will be a very interesting match.

To be fair, Jack should have only gotten a +1 penalty assuming that Arakis was dashing directly away from him.
Also, what about range modifiers?
jc_madden
01-11-2005, 02:22 PM
Does the dash penalty get applied twice?? I thought it was a straight +3ob if either of us are dashing. Either way I missed, +3 ob doesn't make a difference.

Sorry, I forgot about He's Coming Right For Us, because the book is poorly organized.
It's +1 Ob for Arakis' dash, +3 Ob for your dash, and +4 Ob for long range for a total of +8 Ob on top of your regular 1 Ob. Total Ob = 9.

You forgot to mention something about the revision being better... :P
And like I said the 2ob difference didn't make ANY. Though 3 successes on my 5 Black dice isn't too shabby. I was thinking I shouldn't have dashed BUT if i hadn't I woulda been out of pistol range anyway so it's moot.

I would go on for so long that we'd all die of hunger.
Missile combat in the revision is very different at range, and VERY cool. I foresee people wanting to play Wild West games with BW once the new rules are released.

You still would have gotten your shot off, as it was the very first action. 10 paces is absolute maximum range for pistol though. You still would have missed had you stood still. You would have had an 6 Ob (Ob 1 standard, +1 for Arakis' dash, +4 for Long Range). The only way for you to do it would be to roll a 6 on the gunpowder die and then roll another success (assuming you had 4 successes on your skill dice).

What I think might have worked better for you, Jack (and I hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot by telling you this now) is this script:
V1 A1: Acquire/Aim
V1 A2: Aim
Dash towards
V2 A1: Aim
V2 A2: Aim
Dash towards
V3 A1: Fire!
Stand Still
And forfeit V2 A2 aim to "Fire!" conditionally on whether or not the spider gets in at least Medium range. It's risky, but if it succeeds you get a shot off with the benefit of lots of aiming.
jc_madden
01-11-2005, 04:00 PM
Yeah probably a good idea, but I was expecting more than Avoid Avoid in V1.

I was counting on you expecting more than Avoid, Avoid in Volley One. :D
Yagathai
01-11-2005, 04:12 PM
But what would happen in Volley 1 that would stop that script from working? The spider couldn't get all 10 paces to you in one action, and it couldn't have Chow Yun Fat so even a ranged web attack would be at a snapshot penalty...

They'd be locked in melee in no time. And if Jack does dash back, it would require the spider to move toward him for him to be in range at all. Also, I'll double-check, but I'm fairly certain you can only reduce your Ob by half your Perception by Aiming.

Yours is 2 paces, actually. No disinformation if you volunteer this sort of thing!

You're right -- if the spider can close 12 paces in one sprinting round, you're screwed. =)

Unfortunately, I failed to remember that lunging distance for a spear is 4 paces, not 3, so I've had to revise the last volley a little bit. It didn't change the outcome at all though.

I've been using 3 paces as Lunging for spears and 4 paces as being Outside Striking Range.

Oh man! What an intense fight. It all came down to a single Die of Fate roll! Jack's chances were 50/50. If he had rolled a 4, he would have done a B8 wound to Arakis (Severe!). A 5 or 6 would have done a B11 and killed Arakis outright!
Well fought, both of you!

Yep the dice were the end decider I knew I needed a 5 or 6 to end it. I had hoped the DoF woulda been more kind. Good fight from you as well. The level of improvement in your tactics from the first fight was outstanding.

Both Luke and I groaned when you decided to Dash though. For future consideration: Had you Sprinted then instead of Dashed, you could have stated that you were circling around him but keeping the same distance. You would have been just as close, but his Ob would have gone up by +6 rather than +1! With the roll he made, he still would have hit you, but he would not have gotten the +1 to his DoF. True, you probably would not have done very well on your Lock, but Jack would have discharged his pistol and would have had to go back to his swords.

Well not only that but the Lariat was attached, at he was at optimum range for a pull, charging in just seemed counter-intuitive to the whole lariat combat option.
I guess it's Troll time.... did we get a verdict on that?

I dunno. I think the Lock was the right move. True, it was risky, but the best he was going to do with the net was pull you off your feet. It may have worked, it may not. You'd been doing very well with your Natural Defenses until that point.
Yagathai

That is the most cheatin-ist thing I've heard all day! I would never allow a person to use Sprint in that manner. Sprinting as we've played it means moving in a straight line. You ever try to sprint in a tight circle around someone? It's a little impossible, I feel. You'll most likely be jogging around him.

Good job, Verrain. Lock was the right choice.

Well, that's what you get with a 2 on the DoF. Even if I had used the rules you actually play with and not the rules in the book (where over Ob gives +1 to DoF, Double Ob gives +2 and Quadruple Ob gives +3), it STILL would have been an Incidental.
Well, clearly the two of you need to settle this issue...

Here is Jack, I messed up on his Beliefs and Instincts i think. I'm getting the hang of it though.
Concept: A western soldier captured in battle and trained in the ways of the Samurai.
Character Name: Jack Calgary was once known as White Tiger
Born a noble he joined the Kings army at an early age and became an excellent officer. In a war against the great Middle Kingdom of the east he was captured and eventually earned his freedom by defending his master in battle and was taught the ancient way of Taikashido. Jack was then married to a local woman but she and his lord were struck down. Not accepting defeat he refused to commit Seppuku and swore vengeance and became a Ronin. He wandered the land seeking the one who sent the Ninja’s to assassinate his Lord and lady love, but never found him. Bitter he resigned to fighting for money without honor. He is a drunk and a braggart and doesn’t fight very fair but his skills cannot be denied.
