My first Arena Champion, who's fate can be found here (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=895) and discussed here (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=893&start=110):

Arzuné was the last prince born to the throne of a decadent and dying kingdom. The Gods themselves finally tired of their crimes and sunk the land beneath the waves. Arzuné escaped with his faithful retainers, but when he was finally found on a small island by a passing ship only he remained alive and he refuses to speak of them. He set out to wander the world, waiting for the curse of his land to be visited on him.

Then he was slain by an elf.

when i saw that you entered a Lost Atlantean into the arena I went and made one up myself. Yours is very close to what I had.

Some pointers: In the Arena, Perception counts for more than Will. I put my Perception up to 6. (Also, I started with 10 mental, did I do something wrong?) Either way, a 6 Perception gets you a 5 Reflexes.

Some cheating: It's of paramount important to toon out your character as absolutely much as possible. I took Doctrine to get the Faith boost and then actually bought the Dreamer trait from the General List in order to get the additional Faith point.

In the combat, I'd have been praying and hypnotizing constantly. They don't take actions, just syllables. So there's no reason you can't bless yourself to win the fight and then try and freeze your opponent in place.

Lastly, this showed me a lot about Lost Atlanteans! I think when I update them for the revision they'll be much tighter.

good job!

I was going to comment about the lack of Hypnosis myself.

I have to disagree with this a little bit. We haven't seen any catastrophic Steel failures yet, but if we do, it will be because people went with low Will.

I woulda done Per 5 and then taken the Quickened Pulse trait!

Although meeting his fate at the mandibles of a horrible spider was terrible if Jack hadn't made SEVEN successes against that howl of doom he'd be hesitating a while his his feeble B3 will and getting eaten by a mangy mutt woulda been worse!

He was doomed either way -- when he was wounded, if he didn't have a high Will he might have hesitated. However, after he was wounded his Ref dropped to 2, which is almost worse.

That's the thing, he could have gone for Will B4, Per B5 and then gotten the Quickened Pulse trait. He would still have had a B5 Reflexes, and his Hesitation would only increase by 2, not 3.

i'd have rather had the extra Faith point (from Dreamer) and started praying for all this good stuff in the fight itself.

Fair enough, though you'd still only have B4 Faith. And with a minimum Ob of 4, you'd likely be dead before you got anything off.

You're right, I could and should have done better with my Reflexes. Experience with actual play taught me to value Steel very highly, but in an Arena situation I should be able to count on my G7 (!) Steel to carry me and focused on improving my Reflexes.

As for the Faith, I can only plead that I tended to assume that Faith in Dead Gods wouldn't be useful in combat. I think in retrospect I was wrong. :(

Finally, I count 9 mental (7 for age, 1 for Taught By the Ghosts of Long Dead Gods, 1 for Flesh Eater.) Did I miss something or did Luke take different lifepaths?
