View Full Version : POST ON TOPIC
Hi All,
 <- This is the Ranting Imp. He's got something friendly, cordial and nice to say.
Please, please, please post on topic in threads. The Burning Wheel Forums are meant to be an informational resource for players of the game. Folks stop in with questions, read some posts, look for some answers, maybe even post a question. Posting off topic in threads makes it harder to get those questions answered and, hence, harder for folks to enjoy the game.
Here's the new policy: Wise cracks, asides and jokes are ok! SO LONG AS YOUR POST INCLUDES ON TOPIC COMMENTS
Thread drift -- in a thread about gray weapons, say, you manifest some bizarre need to talk about halfings -- is unacceptable
If you're inspired by one thread start a new topic. Do it. Just start a new one, link to the old one.
If you're compelled to make fun of a poster (which I completely understand) take it to the Chatterer
• The Burning Wheel forum is for questions regarding brown book mechanics.
• The Character Burner forum is for questions regarding red book mechanics.
• The Magic Burner forum is for questions about Abstractions, Summoning and Enchanting. New spells are posted there as well.
• The Monster Burner forum is for questions regarding black book mechanics. Also, post new monsters there.
• Spreading Fire is for suggestion variations and new mechanics for any of the books.
• The Wheel of Life is for posting characters
• The Arena (and I'm serious about this) is for posting: Fights, comments on a fight, posting a challenger or a question about the Arena to a ref. Any mechanical questions go in the other applicable forums!. Please help keep the Arena clean.
• Games and Campaigns is for posting about your game in progress or campaign ideas. Do not post player search stuff here.
• The Sea of Abzu is for posting emotional diatribes about the game -- books you read that relate, movies you saw that Burning Wheel emulates -- tangental stuff that relates to the game.
• Player Search is for postings looking for games, looking for players and notifications for convention games.
• Play by Post Forum is pretty self-explanatory.
• The Chatterer is where we talk about stuff completely unrelated to the game, and where we hassle each other, wish each other happy birthday, kiss each other goodnight, etc.
I hope that's clear and that helps. Please help others make the most of these forums by following these guidelines.
sincerely,
-Luke

Why the big crackdown? I see the reason for it in the Arena Rules threads, but why the rigidity everywhere else? Does it really bother you that much?

It's fine for a socialization forum, but if this is intended as a resource for players then all the extraneous discussion makes it more difficult to find the help you need when you're looking for something.

So here's the secret rule and it's the only one you need to follow. Never post OT directly underneath abzu or you will anger him and you will rouse the mighty giant and he will crush you into tiny motes of dust that glitter like so much confetti in the mid-day sun of a San Francisco pride parade. Oh and never feed him after midnight.

It's reached a ridiculous point. Go into that Gray Weapons thread and try to find answers to your questions. Aint nothing there.
This forum MUST be a useful tool for new and old players alike, otherwise the game as a whole suffers.

PS As a moderator, I expect you to enforce the "policy." Like I said, asides and jokes are fine, but just make sure you also post an on-topic comment. If you can't think of something on-topic to say, then you shouldn't be posting in the thread!

Right . . .
A horse walks into a bar. The bartender looks at the horse and says, "Why the long face?"
If this topic wasn't about posting on/off topic you'd have earned yourself a point of blartha, my friend.

I'd just like to point out that this likely isn't intended to single anyone out or suggest that you've been assholes or anything. We all have been posting OT stuff, even Luke. Right now we have a small cadre of regulars on the board and we're all comfortable with each other and we know how to get the answers to the questions we have.
But (::fingers crossed:: ) we'll hopefully have an influx of newbies soon, when the Revision is released. We all need to get in the habit of keeping On Topic in the various forums and save our OT stuff for the Chatterer. That'll make it much easier for the newbies when they arrive, and you guys will get to play the Grizzled Veterans and chew them out when they misstep.

OOOOooooooooo....I've never gotten to be a Grizzled Veteran before.
I better start practicing my "When we played Burning Wheel, we had to use PACES to get to the combat." speech.

Thanks, Luke, for the call to attention. I truly enjoy the zany tone of the regulars' threads, but I also welcome this new standard.

Speaking of halflings, though... can we expect to see rules on them any time soon?
...
what?
 Oh fine. I'll be good.

Grow up.
Rich! Back off! That was uncalled for.
I'm speaking as a moderator, here. The rants and teeth-gnashing are fine, but let's keep these outright attacks to our personal interactions and leave them off the boards.
A little decorum, please?!
thanks,
-Luke
Nulli secundus luke? How oh how did this end up in a thread on shades? Notice how my original "insult" still managed to stay on topic. Technically, under you rules shouldn't you have opened a new thread to rebuke me. You will of course claim a moderator exception. But if the authorities are above the law what value does it have?
If you don't give yourself a point of blartha my faith in your little system will be shattered. And you will have revealed your website to be the little police state that it is.
Please say it aint so.

Dear Fourth Horseman:
Please stop acting like a whiny child. These forums have been mercifully drama-queen free up until this point, and I'd really like them to stay that way.
Thank you.

Is anyone else just freaking dying from irony overdose at how far off topic this thread on staying on topic has gone?

I welcome cleanup. I agree that it is VERY hard to find any definable answers on the list.
Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with a little reset and a FAQ.
I may begin compiling once i get done with my most recent unattainable goal.

that's ok. it's the scapegoat of threads. we spill its blood so that we may all be saved.

Looking at this forum and other similar ones I have a suggestion. i think there should be a forum where people post questions to the developer and that question is answered by a finite number of folk. The problem is (and is with every other game forum out there) that folk ask questions hoping people in the know answer and they get double-talk and corrections from the masses. Thus REAL answers must be hunted down and few have the time and patience for that.
Sure there can be the normal threads that anyone talks in but i think only three or four folk at most should be answering questions about "how the game works, clarifications and the like."

I think this is a great idea. It might be best to wait until a few months after the Revision is released, to account for new questions that will arise from it. But, speaking as a player, this would simplify things enormously.

ok, Eru, Friartuck, your dedication to BW is inspiring. Thank you so much for volunteering to write a Forum FAQ. I'd very much appreciate it, as would everyone else.
The revision will be out shortly. After that, you can get right to work on compiling questions and answers.
thanks!
