True, but there aren't too many characters out there with grey skills. Our arena toons are the gross exceptions to the general rule. If you're players are using 5 points to up a skill to grey at starting they're probably skimping somewhere else and you should promptly beat them over the head with your dice bag.

Even through regular play shade shifting isn't alltogether common by any means.

oh contrare (sp???). I think gray stats are most BW players aspiration and many games I know and have run have seen them in time. Besides, with a decent stat you could just open that gray skill and get a lot of bang for your buck. Will it be worth the 5 points? Statistically speaking a gray skill is worth 2 additional dice without the advancement hit. I think that over the long haul it may very well be worth it.

Count your 3's and you'll get a very real idea if it was worth it or not :D

The longest campaign I ran in BW (over a year long, almost weekly) there was gray sorcery, faith, martial arts, and nearly a half dozen others that would have appeared in three months or so had it gone on longer.

To balance Don's campaign, we've been playing BW for years and no one has greyed out anything. Mostly because the rules for epiphanies change with the seasons, and the second is because Artha isn't exactly pouring forth from fountains. There is one character that has been played regularly for a couple of years and he is sooo close. But then he took a Mortal Wound and won't be played for some time. :?

Which game is this? Cause i thought the main campaign luke's been running has had a few characters with gray skills?

Certainly with the new Artha rules (as Kublai mentioned) will make it more difficult and less about hordeing.

As a note, kublai would also be correct in that I used an Artha that combines the current artha rules with the old ones - normal artha expeditures from the original rules go toward skills and stats to eventually gray them. So where i hadn't been giving out more Artha than Luke nor were my characters using less... rather their uses were double duty.

Any characters with grey shades in Abzu's campaigns were created with them either during the original shift from AD+D or during chargen.

Ah, I understand.
