Hey, all. I'll like to get a nice collection of monsters, spirits, and kami together based off the blossoms era mythos. I think if everyone puts something down we could have a nice resource for GMing put together. When people start posting, I'll get a format together and make it into a printable booklet. Just make a reply to the thread if you're interested in helping out, even if you haven't made the monster yet, so we can see what to expect.

I'm working on a few monsters myself (although one isn't really Japanese myth-based, it's a gryphon) and I'll put them up when I'm done with them.

I would suggest that instead of a gryphon (or by slightly tweaking it), you could do a Nue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nue). It's not a perfect match up, but it is a similar idea (hodgepodge animal). Or I could do it myself if you prefer.

That's a really good idea. I think I will. Thanks for the suggestion!

I got slammed with work the past few days, so I haven't had much time to finish burning my monsters up *sigh*

From what I have seen of the Japanese monster variety, you don't need any imports. They have a crazy amount of way out monsters. All you need to do is look for them.

Check out this website: http://www.obakemono.com/introduction.php

It is dedicated to Japanese Monsters. It has an A to Z section that will keep your players occupied for as long as you like. On rough count, it has about 100 monsters. It lists sources, so you probably can find more.

I concur with Justin, twice. I received that link in an email from a friend a couple weeks back, it has a wide variety of monsters/concepts.

That site was invaluable in creating the monsters in Blossoms. It's cited in the references section. There are lots of other great resources cited there too

Awesome resource, thanks =)

I'm also using these pictures some artist drew in his catalog of Japanese monsters. I wish I could be more accurate on that, but I'm not on my normal computer. When I get back to mine I'll post up what I'm talking about.
(EDIT: lol... it was the post below mine talking about it... http://pinktentacle.com/2010/07/macabre-kids-book-art-by-gojin-ishihara/ )

Also using this wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legendary_creatures_from_Japan

I'm going to go through resources in the back of blossoms too. I had seen it before and had thought 'cool!' but totally forgot to look through it for this.

I have a basic format for the book in my head, and a concept for it done. Hopefully Luke wont mind that I'm stealing stuff from him =P If he okays what I've got in mind I'll post up some concept stuff. If not I'll hash something else out.

My goal is at least 50 different kami, monsters, spirits, and the like. Honestly, though, I'd like to top 100. And it's all going to be straight Japanese mythos by popular demand. If anyone wants to help out, you are very much encouraged! It'll be very difficult to tackle this project single handedly. So if anyone posts up something to be included, they'll be credited with it in the booklet. Also, if anyone has talent with black and white graphics that have a resemblance to the ones found in the monster section of Blossoms, your help doing select mobs would be awesome.

My current 3 concept mobs are:

Nue
River Imps
Konaki-jijī (an infant spirit that cries until it is picked up, then increases its weight and crushes its victim)

Hopefully there's some response =) Happy gaming, all
