View Full Version : Trading successes

Was thinking of instituting a house rule letting a player trade successes on an attack roll down to a zero margin of success, and then using those successes as bonus dice on the next roll (a la Swords & Sorcery for SORCERER).
The idea being, building up the momentum for a big big hit, esp when fighting Grayscale beasts...
Whaddya thunk?

hm, i can see how that can very easily turn too powerful. Maybe if you make it a 2 to one ratio and limit it to a trait or something, that might make it better. I would just be careful, because in the ned you might justhave your players dodge all the time and wait for that one mortal hit.

They wouldn't be able to script "avoid;" it would have to be a Strike or other offensive maneuver, something that would have caused damage...
Maybe limiting it to Strike, Great Strike, & Counterstrike. I also like the idea of tying it to a specific trait, or perhaps making it a martial art maneuver.
I think of fencing, where the effect of many attacks is not damage, but getting position for the kill.

what i mean is that this takes away some tactical part. All they need to do is script avoids and strikes and save up enough dice to hit hard enough so that parrying/avoiding is impossible and it is a superior wound.
All the guesswork and tactical thinking on when to script a feint or counterstrike would not be needed as much as before.
At least the way it is now. I would make it a trait and I would slim it down heavily.

Hi Pheel,
If you wanted to run a John Carter of Mars or Conan the Cimmerian type game, this'd be a fine mod.
It does fight a bit with our other dice manipulation schemes, though. I think it would quickly get out of hand with Artha, help and FoRKs playing into it. I'd actually remove those bits from the game if you were going to go with Sorcerer-style victories. Maybe use Fate artha...
Anyway, you only need a few successes to get anything done in BW. Die pools are structured the way they are for a reason. So be careful, you don't want the game to have a quick flash and then grow uninteresting.
Let us know how it goes. Post some actual play!
