Hey y'all. As the header may have clued you in, I am new to the Burning Wheel scene. Really new: the first time I'd ever played or even heard of the system was this past July at Connecticon. There I had the retroactively somewhat mind-blowing experience of playing a round of The Sword run by Luke himself, not to mention sitting around for the better part of another 8 hours having the time of my life just watching my friend play another round of it and then one of Theylon's Rift, which I'm sure I'm misspelling.

Anyway, the two of us ended up having such a great time with it that I bought the books and we signed up for 10 10 10 together. (I blame Luke for encouraging us at the con.) I'm definitely excited to come, but being a freshly singed little newbie I have a couple of possibly fairly stupid questions to ask to make sure the two of us don't drive you all too insane this weekend.

First, what rules would it be handiest for us to review? We're obviously going to try and take a crash course of at least the whole intro and spokes sections of the Core Rulebook on Thursday night, but if there are any bits in particular you can think of that tend to come up in play a lot which we should focus on, that'd be helpful. I just don't want us to end up grinding scenarios to a hault too much while we go "hurrr how i mine for fish."

Second, characters: Should we burn or partially-burn up a couple of characters for ourselves ahead of time or anything like that, or will that sort of thing mostly be taken care of via game runners bringing pre-burned sheets of their own? Should we take a good noodle at the Character Burner anyway?

Thanks, and sorry for us smearing our inexperience everywhere. We're hoping to have a lot of fun this weekend and look forward to seeing y'all there!

Welcome to the community Arzdruni!

No need to burn characters unless you want to. All scenarios will have characters provided.

I think we're all pretty good at walking newbies through the rules, but you can't go wrong by reviewing The Hub and The Spokes (the first 77 pages of the brown book).

I think we'll all be quite willing to teach, but maybe you should be familiar with:

- Scripting, ie Reflexes = # of actions and how to distribute them

- Knowing you can test skills you don't have ala Beginner's Luck

- How to use Emotional Attributes like Greed, Grief, Hate or Spite

I think most, if not all, games will provide pre-gens, so don't worry about creation.

Hiya Ardzuni,

I'd review the first 70 pages of BWR and read as much of the Adbu as you can (if you have it). I wouldn't worry about making characters. All characters should be provided.

Don't sweat the "homework" too much, Ardzuni! With so many vets at each table, you're sure to have a good time and learn a ton as you play. I know I will. Come with what you do know, bone up on some things you aren't sure of, and just be prepared to have a good time. No sense stressing about a gaming convention. I don't think Luke'll force a pop-quiz on us at the door, after all.

(If he does, just cheat off of Paul, Judd, Dwight, Brodie, Daniel, and many others.)

Way to put the pressure on. :( I mean damn, I've still not made it through every entry in the AdBu!

Well I guess I know what I'm going to be doing on the plane......in approximately 31 hours, 7 minutes, and 26 seconds.

Two more sleeps!

P.S. If I do land in a Mouse Guard game I'll be the one looking around expectantly at others, waiting for rules quotes. :p

Me and my girlfriend are also relative newbs at the game, bought the books about 4 or 5 months ago and i just ran our first game the other night. even with that i still had trouble with the rules sometimes, but we had fun! which is arguably the most important part! so far ive been really encouraged by the community on the forums and everyone has been really supportive! so have no fear!

Har har! Lookit the noobs! Bet they don't even know the situational obs for steel tests.

For serious though, if you just play toward your BITs, know how to use artha, and understand that BW players can leverage lots more authorship than traditional rpgs (via Circles and Wises), you'll be good to go.

See you @ the con.
