We kicked off a BW campaign last Friday, returning to Josria, a world we have gamed in (mostly using DnD) for 7 or 8 years. Besides 5 or 6 sessions of a one-on-one game with one of the players and playing through The Sword, this is the first real BW experience for all of us.

Situation:
The characters are members of the lesser nobility (4 LP characters starting with Born Noble) returning from war to find that their lands have been taken over by the enemy and their families/loved ones killed/taken captive/missing in their absence.

The Cast:
Pelcyval (Pel) Landis Noerthfal M'Caian:
The son of the old Lord M’Caian, his father was already well past middle-age when Pel was born. Pel’s older brother (by more than a quarter century!) passed away when Pel was young, leaving him as the heir to the family estate. Pel’s sensibilities tend more toward the criminal than the noble, something that Elwin (his late brother’s oldest son) hopes that his influence can curb.
Born Noble -> Lead to Noble Court -> Student -> Courtier -> Lead to City -> Criminal
Relationships:
Lady Consuela Maria Jolanda Augustus III (Engaged to be married. Captive.)
Ellesandra Siobhan Hydrangea M'Caian (Older sister… hateful. Captive.)

Elwin M’Caian:
The grandson of the old Lord M’Caian, Elwin is Pel’s nephew (though Pel is the younger of the two M’Caians). When his father died and it became clear that Pel would be the one to inherit the M’Caian estate, Elwin left to join the church. Hearing word of the troubles in his family’s land, he has now returned and seeks to turn his family from their manipulative ways.
Born Noble -> Religious Acolyte -> Lead to Religious -> Cloistered Monk -> Pardoner
Relationships:
Lacole (Forbidden love interest… a commoner. Location unknown.)

Dag Townsend:
The eldest son of a landless noble, Dag turned from the path of becoming a knight to study the ways of the arcane. His brother’s marriage of Lady Elise brought him in contact with the Augustus family, and the Lady Consuela in particular.
Born Noble -> Page -> Arcane Devotee -> Lead to Noble Court -> Court Sorcerer
Relationships:
Lady Consuela Maria Jolanda Augustus III (Forbidden love interest… engaged to Pel. Captive.)

Sir Goran Townsend:
Dag’s younger brother, Goran has already been knighted and married Elise, the eldest daughter of Lord Oscar Augustus (and Consuela’s older sister). As such, he unexpectedly stands to inherit the Augustus estate through his wife after the recent loss of her two older brothers in the war.
Born Noble -> Page -> Squire -> Knight
Relationships:
Elise (Wife. Location unknown.)
Lord Oscar Augustus (Father-in-law / liege. Captive.)

Sir Keyan:
Though his family estate is in Alfafter Downs, Keyan grew up under the tutelage of Duke Heavybrook in Norcourt from a young age. Though his own lands are still several days ride to the north and currently safe from the ravages of war, he has returned to restore his family lands (to which he is heir) from the hands of the enemy.
Born Noble -> Page -> Squire -> Knight
Relationships:
Duke Ernst Heavybrook (liege… influential, but geographically distant.)

Session #1 coming soon...

So I have understood that you can use Circles in two major ways:

1) Introduce a character from your past (that need not have existed in the game context until this moment). This character must be someone you can weave into the story of your lifepaths.

2) Introduce a character whom you don't know but could have conceivably met in the course of your lifepaths. I interperet this as "Using the characters you do know from your past, contacting them, and asking them for a lead to the character you are trying to find now." It basically skips the step of "i'm going to circle up that pirate captain that ran a job for me way back and ask him where I can find a good bowman who's steady on his feet."

But I have not understood the following:

Lets say your character has lifepaths that have nothing to do with religion, and nothing in the backstory of your character has anything to do with religion. Now your character needs to find a priest willing to help you pull some dastardly plot against the cardinal (or whatever).

Do you use circles even though you have no real way of weaving said priest into your backstory? Or do you use something like City-Wise (with beginner's luck if you don't have it?).

Just hoping for a clarification here, since I couldn't find it in the rules.

If you're using Beginner's Luck for, say, body of argument in a Duel of Wits, do you halve your successes? Is that how you handle Beginner's Luck with open tests? That's what makes sense to me, but it doesn't really say in the book that I can find.

Same thing with versus tests... do you double your opponent's successes, or halve your own if you're using Beginner's Luck?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

Noob question about using nature in place of a skill a character doesn't have

I am new to MG, I just purchased the book last week from my LCS. I have played a little bit of D20 in the past, but I like this system better because it seems to be more narrative and less explicitly focused on combat (Ex: Star Wars RPG--might as well just be called the extended rule set for Star Wars minis battle game).

Anyway, sorry for the noob question, but I am curious if anyone has any thoughts about what is to stop a player from always using their nature in place of skills they don't have? (Resolution: Begginer's Luck)

For example, I have been using a lot of pathfinding in my first few missions, which one of my characters doesn't have any rating in. The other character has a rating of two, which pretty much makes her useless for all but the easiest trails. I am aware that the character who doesn't have pathfinding will never earn it by substituting nature all of the time, but I think his nature is 4, which means it would take quite a few missions to get above a 4 with pathfinding. I know using nature all of the time is a quick fix, but I am just concerned it is too tempting for my players.

Thanks for any thoughts,

There are all of these little moments when Fight! mechanics come out that are pivotal points:

Aaron making Celedon's really difficult armor check against Gnollish mace damage.

Pete rolling so brutally well, cementing Auric's rep as a Gnoll-slaying bad-ass.

Cannic, a plucky NPC, making a critical bow shot at the Red Wizard began to cast Rain of Fire.

These are just the three that stand out to me but there are a dozen more little rolls that come up that all feel like the moments when things could have gone from heroic to tragic.

Tonight had plenty of those and it felt pretty damned good.

The game started with the players deciding to send the Burning Wheel itself back to Waterdeep in the fire-proofed hands of Khelben Blackstaff. Aaron rolled a brutal circles check to get the wizard a solid escort back to the City of Splendor, insuring the Wheel's safe return home.

It was a solid session, with difficult decisions, wounds and a nice set-up for next week.

Next week we start the game with a party in the Wanderer's Dell, funded by Prince Auric's amazing Resources. Elves will arrive from Evermeet, the homeland to settle in Waterdeep. Auric is thinking about investing in the gnomish mad idea of a Dragon Cart that would run on a metal road between Waterdeep and Neverwinter. And once that is done and tests are made, they will descend into Undermountain, not exactly sure what the reason will be but it will have something to do with a certain Beholder Crimelord and the long road to Skullport.

Guys,

I saw Slayer for the fist time tonight. It was epic. A combination of a couple of beers, a few tokes of a joint, a best friend and one of the best metal bands ever, made for one of the best nights of my life.

Slayer Rules!

The lyrics were like prayers and the heavy metal riffing was like thunder. Feeling the music and bonding with all the other fans kind of gave me an insight into Orc bonfires. My mind was whirling. I never thought that I would get to see slayer. But tonight, at age 37, with my buddy Dave, I did. Awesome.

Amazing.
