I am new to MG, I just purchased the book last week from my LCS. I have played a little bit of D20 in the past, but I like this system better because it seems to be more narrative and less explicitly focused on combat (Ex: Star Wars RPG--might as well just be called the extended rule set for Star Wars minis battle game).

Anyway, sorry for the noob question, but I am curious if anyone has any thoughts about what is to stop a player from always using their nature in place of skills they don't have? (Resolution: Begginer's Luck)

For example, I have been using a lot of pathfinding in my first few missions, which one of my characters doesn't have any rating in. The other character has a rating of two, which pretty much makes her useless for all but the easiest trails. I am aware that the character who doesn't have pathfinding will never earn it by substituting nature all of the time, but I think his nature is 4, which means it would take quite a few missions to get above a 4 with pathfinding. I know using nature all of the time is a quick fix, but I am just concerned it is too tempting for my players.

Thanks for any thoughts,

I found that I had no good answer for him.

I was going through my book for information relevant to this, but I could not come up with anything. I have suspicions, but I want to be sure.

My lead guess goes something like this:
Wises can be used to roll for tests like regular skills to get information from the GM (higher scores = better chance to get information)

Accurate?

However, in other challenges one mouse (the idea originator) seems to roll with optional help from the other mice. Is it the same with weather?

Ok. So I'm including a snowstorm journey conflict in my first adventure. What are the sort of things a snowstorm does when it attacks, defends, feints, and maneuvers? Is the snowstorm's goal to kill mice or to force them underground, to make them sick and tired?

Just trying to build a good narrative to the conflict.

Thanks.

I've just read Mouse Guard and find it really good, but I was left with a few questions.

1. How limited is the Player's turn? Let us say that I'm GMing "Deliver the mail" and the bird stole the letter. Would the player need one check to start the "side misson" or one check for finding its nest, then one check for starting a conflict with the bird?

2. If a trait becomes level 3 can I still get one extra dice when using that trait?

3. The books says that a mouse can't become a guard mouse before turning 18, and a mouse can become a tenderpaw at the age of 14. This is all nice and good, but then the book says that if the mouse uses more than two seasons to become a Guard Mouse he would be sent back to his parents. This got me a little confused. Can a mouse become a official guard mouse at the age of 15/16 if he became a tenderpaw at the age of 14?

4. Can one change one's goal in the middle of a conflict? Let's say Team A and B are fighting and they both have the goal to kill the other team. Team A understands that they don't have a chance against Team B and wants to flee in the middle of the conflict. Will the fleeing part have to be a part of the compromise, or can they change it in the conflict?

You guys are great. Thanks for the answers. Here's one more question.

So is the reason there are teams of 3 instead of 4 or more because the dice granted by helping would get out of hand. And when another team helps another team is it just one dice, or one per each participant?

I'm totally new to burning wheel just reading the mouseguard rulebook. Does burning wheel have more conditions that you could add to a character besides tired, injured, and sick? Are they worth adding in?

Do GMs and Players go to great lengths to roleplay out these things to make them interesting with side effects? The one thing I don't want to do is hand out injury cards without some sort of detail to the injury and a possible effect besides the dice hit.

What do other GMs do?
