    [BWHQ] Tales of Ya-gahn

where emukt, thor, drozdal, abzu, and i brainstorm about our upcoming weekend Burning Wheel campaign, create our characters, and remind ourselves that Burning Wheel is still hot!

fellas, what do you want your campaign to be about?

like any good maoist, i'm interested in doing a PEASANTS game (highly entwined with magic, like Earthsea).

luke was talking about hunting a dragon.

I think we should do Earthsea style peasants/hedge mages/tinkerer-enchanters dealing with a dragon. The dragon would be the ultimate aim of the quest: we would have to devise a way to defeat him. If we have an enchanter in the group, the focus of some play could be retreive the necessary "ingredients" for a device to deal with the dragon.

We could each have different motivations, different attitudes toward the dragon. This scenario is aimed at a longer arc of play -- like a year!

I'm a big fan of 3 LP characters these days, especially for a game aimed at longer term play. I say we stick to 3 LPs or maybe 4.

I'm down with the Earthsea influence. How far do we want to go? I'm ready to play on something like Gont if you guys are down. We're on an isolated island, far from the capital. Every village has its witch. She's the healer, midwife and wise woman.

Wizards are learned men of great power. Highly respected, but set apart.

There's some sort of tribute arrangement with the dragon (a la Dragonslayer), but we either can't or won't pay it this time around?

Why do we have to take care of this ourselves? Why can't we send for help? Or have we sent for help but none is forthcoming?

Why do we need antecedents from the Dragon? What are we trying to create? Is it to defeat an even greater threat?

Without getting into too much detail, what steps or milestones do we need to shoot for before we're ready to tackle the dragon?

I corner him and stab him in the face!

You're missing a tier in the Earthsea tripytch: Sorcerers. There's witches, sorcerers and wizards (in that order of power).

Going to wait for Aaron and Dro to chime in before I answer any questions.

I have some hesitation about peasants getting the better of a dragon.

What if it is a case of abandonment? The elders or priests that were in charge of the offering - vanished.

We all could have different ideas about where and why they went. Maybe they left us - maybe they were taken.

We need to get them back!

I'm not talking about "git yer pitchforks! We gots us a dragon t' keeel!"

I'm talking about insurmountable opposition that forces us into a major quest.

But I'm also open to other ideas. Hit me!

    Earthsea: Awesome
    Peasants: Great
    3LP's: Shweet!
Are we limiting ourselves to Peasant / Villager / Outcast settings only? Any extra LP's, traits?
Are we playing magic/summoning weilding peasants, or do we embark on a quest (trip?) towards the isle of Roke where we will beg Archmages on our knees to help us and save our village from ze Dragon?

I'm not feeling the "dragon". I could be talked into it I just need to hear a decent situation.

How about Earthsea but like in Farthest Shore? Rejection of magic in place of searching for eternal life? We could be a mix of sorcerers and witches trying to figure out what's happening to our power.

Maybe we did something and now are hiding from Roke?

Give me a tangible goal. "Hiding" doesn't seem as exciting to me as "epic quest to defeat/outwit dragon."

EDIT: I don't want to reenact any of the Earthsea books.
